We’ve all heard it all over the years – this makeup artist prefers to use his fingers, while that celebrity prefers to use a brush. Another expert will put a lot of trust in Beautyblender. These suggestions are helpful, but often cause me more questions. What’s the best way to do it?Which products require which tools?Read on to learn how to apply foundation using a sponge and all the other tools available.

How to Apply Foundation with a Sponge

If you’re looking for flawless results, look no further than sponges. Sponges are ideal for the perfect natural foundation application – and perhaps everything else as well. Keep in mind, though, that the effect after applying foundation with a sponge may vary depending on the type of foundation you’re using. For example, sponges work best with lightweight liquid formulas or foundation sticks. Creamy, thick foundation is best done with a brush (so you can sand the edges for a more natural look).

Moisten Before Use

To get the most out of the sponge, be sure to wet it before use, squeezing out the water so that it stays moist but not soggy. This will ensure that the foundation is applied and distributed evenly.

Build Coverage

Instead of applying a thick layer of foundation, try a little before applying it for a more natural look. If I had to choose my favorite makeup method, I would choose to use a sponge. Coverage builds, the result is almost flawless, and the finish lasts all day.

The coverage also depends on the type of foundation product you’re using. If you’re using a foundation stick, you can apply it directly to the skin for thicker coverage, or dot it directly onto a damp sponge for a more natural look.

Experiment

While we can’t help but love what we love, sometimes a little trial and error can go a long way, meaning it’s worth exploring other tool portfolios to determine what works best for you. Using different application methods and mixing tools is a great way to experiment and tailor your routine.

How to Apply Foundation with Your Fingers

While personal preference will definitely influence what makeup tools you use to apply foundation, strategy should also be a deciding factor. The difference between a brush, a sponge, and a finger is a different product used at the time. For example, fingers are great for products that need to be slightly heated to mix. (Think: eyeshadow, base and concealer, and so on).

Tip: If you choose to use your fingers, it’s best to use your ring finger to apply the product as it uses the least amount of pressure. Also, be sure to pat lightly and never rub it.

For pressed eyeshadows, we recommend using your fingers, as it provides maximum color effect and the most controlled application. Remember to wash your hands before applying makeup with your fingers. The last thing you want is for your fingers covered in dirt, bacteria, and oil to burst immediately.

How to Apply Foundation with a Brush

Similar to using your fingers, the brush can be applied intensively, but with better results. This makes them perfect for applying eyeshadow and powder. However, when using the brush, don’t push too hard – you want everything to mix together. Apply according to the amount of product you want to apply, not all at once.

If you’re not sure what to do with which brush, you’re not alone. There are so many brushes out there that it can be overwhelming to find the right one. However, after talking to experts and testing our own brushes, we narrowed down our options to just five essentials: powder, blush, foundation, flat eye brush, and eyeshadow crease brush.
